If the deer can do it, I certainly can. That thought was racing through my mind one spring as I emerged from a jungle of willows only to be met by a wall of cattails any Border Patrol officer would have been proud to patrol. It looked impenetrable. Still, I knew the deer used not only the willow jungle for winter cover, but dove deeper into the cattails to give themselves shelter from relentless prairie winds that drove subzero temperatures through their thick coats. Taking a deep breath, I reached out my arms and separated the masses of cattails to explore.
