Dawson Creek, B.C., is a small town that proudly displays Milepost 0 for the Alaska Highway. It was always a thrill when I arrived in the town, knowing I was starting what was sure to be a great hunting adventure. After a few hours of driving, I’d turn off the famous highway at Milepost 222. There, a dirt road leads to a stand of timber, which soon gives way to a huge clearing, where a gravel runway points into the prevailing wind. A few dozen pickups, whose drivers are somewhere off in the surrounding wilderness, line the edge of the landing strip.
